Teacher Cadet Weekly Meeting Activity details can be found on the MENTORS page. Cadets should have completed the online lesson on google classroom in order to participate meaningfully in meetings. Please encourage your cadets to complete the google classroom activities before your meeting day.
You should conduct one face to face meeting for a minimum of ONE hour and a maximum of 90 minutes weekly.
A register of all meeting attendees should be kept. An official register will be sent to you. Please do not add students names to the register. If a student's name does not appear on the register, contact the FTB office and a new register will be issued with students names inserted if they have been confirmed as official teacher cadets.
You do not have to do all of the activities suggested on the mentors page. Activities that you must complete because it reinforces curriculum content will be highlighted in bold for you. If you have an activity that would complement the topic being presented, feel free to share! And certainly, you are free to use them in your meetings. Your school cadet meetings is a time when you are able to engage in various activities with your cadets aside from the cadet curriculum as well.
GENERAL MEETING ACTIVITIES:
Here are some suggestions of general activities you may want to include at some point during the semester in your cadet meetings:
1. Invite former cadets that are teachers at your school to share their cadet experiences and why they chose to teach.
2. "Inspiring the Future" award nominations. Nominate a teacher at your school to get a "Inspiring the Future" ward from your cadets. This teacher would have demonstrated the good practice being learnt during the week and is an example the cadets can follow on how to practice that skill when they become teachers in the future. The award can be a certificate, lunch for the day, a treat, whatever you and your cadets can afford or create!
3. Host a movie date. Watch a movie together related to teaching. Many movies are available for free on Youtube, or if you have a Netflix account, you may be able to access one there. For cohorts that meet only one hour weekly, this may have to be a special event for your cohort or you may watch the movie over two meetings. Contact the coordinator for suggested movies if you are not sure which ones may be appropriate.
4. Field trips. Some field trips will be included in suggested activities for some weekly meetings, but perhaps there is a field trip to a special school or an organization that supports teachers that you have not considered.
5. Adopt a classroom. You and your cadets may wish to adopt a teacher's classroom and transform it through innovative decoration. This could be a long term project that cadets complete over a series of weeks.
6. Plan a special assembly together to celebrate teachers, teaching, learning, or any specific subject area.
7. Engage in teacher helper activities. If your school allows, target a teacher per week and tell them that the cadets will help them mark their books, copy papers, create test questions and more. This could be combined with your "Inspiring the Future" award.
8. Adopt a bulletin board. Many schools have bulletin boards in hallways or in public spaces around the school. Ask your administration to adopt one of these boards and keep it decorated year round.
Perhaps you have a suggestion of something that mentors can do with their cadets that worked well for you. If so, please share!
If you would like to assist in the production of weekly videos, worksheets and activities for this year in the Teacher Cadet Programme, please contact the coordinator. I would really appreciate the help!
